A boost for mobility research

Thuringian Mobility Innovation Center receives €6.41 million

State Secretary Dr. Katja Böhler has today presented a funding grant of more than €6.41 million to the Thuringian Innovation Center for Mobility (ThIMo). The funds are provided under the FTI-Thuringia INVEST directive, which is financed through ERDF and state funds and forms part of the overarching funding initiative “Thuringia MOTIVation – move to innovation.” The funding will primarily support investments in ThIMo’s research infrastructure as well as expenditures for personnel and technical equipment.

"ThIMo has long established itself as a pioneer in sustainable mobility technologies – including on the international stage. The €6.41 million for ThIMo therefore marks a decisive step toward the mobility transition. At the same time, it underscores the Free State of Thuringia's commitment to state-owned innovations," said State Secretary Dr. Katja Böhler on the occasion of the decision announcement.

Supported by the Thuringian Ministry of Science, the ThIMo (Thuringian Innovation and Technology Center) will be further developed in the current funding period 2021–2027 to meet the growing demands of the Thuringian economy – especially with regard to current and future challenges in the automotive industry. The "Digital Mobility" research initiative forms the core of this development, supported by the funding awarded today. Digital transport systems, digital components, materials, products and processes, as well as digital networking, are the focus areas of this research initiative.

Since its founding in 2011, ThIMo has become a cornerstone of mobility research in Thuringia, supporting the transformation process in the automotive industry. ThIMo is the largest research project in the history of the Ilmenau University of Technology and has been supported by the Thuringian Ministry of Science from the outset. Funding has primarily been provided for research-related infrastructure and buildings, as well as research groups.
