Simply discard after use: Thuringia reinvents the FFP2 mask

How can reliable infection protection be combined with genuine environmental protection? The collaborative project MyBioMask is setting new standards in this regard: partners from Thuringia’s research and business sectors—including INNOVENT e.V., Thorey Textilveredelung, and Heyfair—have developed a novel FFP2 mask that is fully biodegradable after use. By utilizing innovative biopolymers and custom-engineered nonwovens, the mask not only protects the wearer but also prevents long-term plastic waste.

From laboratory-based material development to automated manufacturing on modern production lines, the project impressively demonstrates the synergy between regional value creation and sustainable materials research—yet another example of how EU funding drives forward-looking innovation in Thuringia.
