Flood protection for Erfurt: Historic paper weir gets ready for the future

With funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the historic paper weir on the Gera River is being renovated and modernized to better protect the city from flooding in the long term. The weir is being rebuilt to withstand a once-in-a-century flood – a crucial measure in light of increasing climate risks.

The renovation combines the preservation of the historic building with state-of-the-art flood protection technology. The 1994 flood clearly demonstrated the urgent need for this protection. Thanks to ERDF funding, Erfurt can implement this crucial infrastructure project and protect its residents and urban infrastructure in the long term.
