The city of Eisenach currently has flood protection designed to withstand a flood event with a lifespan of approximately 20 years. The goal is to upgrade this protection to withstand a 100-year flood event. During the last funding period, measures (MK) I and parts of MK II were already implemented based on the flood protection concept. Completing the flood protection measures in MK II and constructing the flood protection systems within Eisenach itself (MK III) are very complex projects. The aim is to implement these projects in several phases during the 2021–2027 funding period (with the final financing phase running until 2029).
On June 17, 2024, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the flood protection project Eisenach - sub-project “Inner-city expansion of flood protection Eisenach, measures complex III”.
The total costs of the project (as of January 31, 2024) amount to approximately 33.8 million euros, of which 20.3 million euros are ERDF funds.
EU funds will be used for the construction of flood protection measures along the Hörsel River from Langensalzaer Straße to Karolinenstraße. This challenging section involves the existing infrastructure, traffic management, and urban integration. A new Karolinen Bridge is also planned with EU funding.
