Crystal-Clear Optics: Thuringian Collaboration Revolutionizes Lens Technology

With ERDF funding, an innovative collaborative project in Jena aimed at developing high-precision plastic lenses is being advanced, with the goal of making lens technology for cameras, drones, and medical equipment fit for the future. The project partners are developing these new optical components—made from specialized plastics—in such a way that complex freeform surfaces in the nanometer range can be reproducibly manufactured and rival traditional glass in every respect; this represents a crucial step in light of increasing demands for lightweight, ultra-compact, and cost-effective camera systems. Thanks to ERDF support, the project partners are able to jointly implement this pivotal initiative, thereby sustainably strengthening both Thuringia’s leading global position in the optics sector and industrial practice in the long term.
