Latest generation 7-Tesla MRI scanner inaugurated at Jena University Hospital

At the University Hospital Jena, a state-of-the-art magnetic field tomography device was inaugurated on 9.8.24. The 7-Tesla MRI is used for brain imaging in research projects at the German Center for Mental Health. The central German location of this center will be coordinated in Jena, as will its networked research imaging, which will enable innovative multicenter studies in psychiatry in the future.

The Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society is providing 10.1 million euros for the device from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the REACT-EU initiative.

The new MRI machine works with a magnetic field of 7 Tesla. This ultra-high-field imaging enables the representation of the structure, function and metabolism of the brain in a completely new quality through significantly better spatial and temporal resolution in conjunction with spectroscopic measurements.

"With the 7-Tesla MRI, the UKJ is setting new standards in medical research and the development of innovative treatment approaches. This investment is therefore also a testimony to the commitment of the Free State of Bavaria to strengthening the health care system and promoting innovative research. The UKJ thus proves once again that it is one of the leading research institutions in Germany, especially in the field of mental health," says Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee.
